I am Paul Brothwood, an Operations Manager at National Grid Electricity Distribution, Chartered Environmentalist and motorcyclist from the West Midlands. My interests include operational improvement, environmental management, workplace safety, infrastructure, leadership and adventure travel.

Operations leadership and sustainability

My career has taken me through financial services, public service, construction, infrastructure and electricity distribution. Throughout these roles, I have helped organisations improve standards, safety, culture, governance and operational performance.

I am a Chartered Environmentalist and Full Member of the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals. My work has included environmental management, sustainability planning and management systems aligned with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

One lesson has remained consistent throughout my career. Strong organisations rarely succeed through one grand gesture. Progress comes from clear expectations, capable people, honest communication and the discipline to improve every day.

Leadership is not limited to job titles or meeting rooms. It appears in how people respond when something goes wrong, how they treat colleagues and whether they remain accountable when decisions become difficult.

Motorcycles and long-distance travel

Outside work, motorcycles have become a major part of my life. Riding creates time to think and teaches patience, preparation, risk awareness and resilience.

Motorcycle travel has taken me across Europe and the United States, from Alpine mountain roads to the Tail of the Dragon. Each journey has reinforced the value of preparation and the importance of adapting when plans change.

My current motorcycle is a Suzuki Hayabusa 25th Anniversary Edition. It is part engineering achievement, part travel companion and occasionally an expensive reminder that tyres disappear quickly.

The Hayabusa combines speed, comfort and long-distance ability. It has also introduced me to riders, events and places that I would otherwise never have encountered.

Honda Adventure Roads 2026

In June 2026, I joined a group of 30 riders for Honda Adventure Roads in the Pyrenees. Moving from the Suzuki Hayabusa to the Honda Transalp meant leaving familiar road riding behind and taking on gravel, rocky climbs, steep descents and remote mountain trails.

The experience included training, teamwork and guidance from accomplished riders including Kirian Mirabet and Dakar competitor Tosha Schareina. I also received the event’s award for the best jump.

Honda Adventure Roads reinforced many of the lessons found in operational leadership. Preparation matters, confidence grows through practice and strong teams support people when conditions become difficult.

The Pyrenees journey became much more than a motorcycle event. It tested my ability to learn quickly, manage risk and remain calm outside my normal riding environment.

Scuba diving and exploration

Travel and adventure have always mattered to me. I am also a qualified PADI Divemaster and have been fortunate enough to dive in locations across the world.

My diving experiences include encounters with sharks in Honduras and South Africa. Those moments taught me that calm observation often reveals something entirely different from the reputation created by fear and sensational headlines.

Scuba diving requires preparation, controlled decision-making and trust in your equipment and the people around you. Those principles apply equally to motorcycle travel and operational leadership.

I am drawn to places that people often pass without noticing. This includes underwater environments, remote roads, historic buildings and forgotten locations with unusual stories.

Writing from experience

This website brings together the different parts of my life and work. I write about operational leadership, sustainability, environmental performance, workplace safety, motorcycle travel, the Suzuki Hayabusa, Honda Adventure Roads and scuba diving.

The subjects might appear separate, but they share common themes. Preparation, resilience, curiosity and good judgement matter whether you are leading a team, crossing the Pyrenees on a motorcycle or entering the water with sharks.

My articles are based on direct experience. They record the people, places and lessons that have shaped my approach to work, travel and life.

Paul Brothwood has spent much of his career improving operational performance, environmental management, quality and health and safety.
